I like free stuff and Freeware is the best
Shareware is try and then buy which does not appeal to me
Firewalls
Its very important to have a firewall installed on ur pc!!!
A firewall makes it harder for h4ckers to gain access to ur pc. Plus a good firewall will let u know what apps are outgoing and incoming on ur pc. So if u do have a trojan (A trojan = beacon for h4cker) on ur pc, then the firewall will let u know.
Trojans = bad
Heres a couple of freebee firewalls that are good
Works on WinXp and Vista

Sygate which works on WinXp but not Vista.
Its not updated anymore, but works a treat on XP

Free Anti virus software
You can get a firewall and anti-virus all in 1, but most of them u have to pay for after a year or so, plus they can hog up the system and slow the pc down.
I prefer to use a seperate firewall and Anti-virus
Best free Anti-Virus software out there at the mo is AVG with free updates for personal home computers
If i download a file to my desktop from a "not so safe" website, i right click on the file and select from the list "scan with avg free" before i run that file just to make sure it does not contain a trojan or a virus. It only takes a few seconds and can save u alot of headaches:!:
New Virii is being made every day, and the anti-virii companies struggle to keep up, so anti-virus products are not full proof just to make that clear ok
AVG

Ok now for Malware and spyware.
These are stand alone apps that only run when u wish them to.
To be used daily or weekly, but do use them as they find allsorts of strange stuff
Adaware

Ccleaner
When "Installing" Ccleaner, i untick everything except the top box.
Removes cookies, history, temp files in temp folder plus much more.
Lots of virii now days store them selfs in temp folder until u restart the pc, then they will install them selfs as the computer starts up.
I use daily

Spybot
Similar to adaware but scans deeper.
When installing, i tend to untick all except top box (Desktop icon) Up to u

Unless u know what ur doing with this, then don`t down-load and play with.
When used and scanned, it will list important reg files that windows users. ONLY tick boxes if u "know" what needs removing.
It helps u with browser hijackings and a few known and unknown nasties
