it's not bad, not bad at all. i've followed the coen's work ever since their seminal 'blood simple'... they lost it a bit with 'ladykillers' and 'intolerable cruelty' [they should know better than to remake an ealing comedy, ffs], but seem back on form now.

the ending gave me a bit of a double-take. i was expecting more.

did you grab the one with the good aspect ratio?

Is this a cam quality? Assume so as its so new but sometimes you get the screeners.

I have so most codecs installed, so i have a choice of full sceen or widescreen. Even in full screen i don`t loose any of the sides as the codec stretches it.

I don`t d/load camcorder versions, just rips and screeners for me

heh. i usually wait for the screener, or go for the R5.

there's two versions of 'no country...' out, one with the correct aspect ratio [16/9] and one with slight cropping to all sides [2.35/1]. both are screeners. there's also a cam out, but why grab a cam when there's screeners about?

I made the mistake of getting a couple of cams once and never again! Spoilt it. Haven't looked for anything lately so when I next look I should be spoilt for choice!

Did recently d/l a few films for the Ipod. Amazing quality! Very impressed. Never could see the use for vid on the new Ipod Nanos until I got lumbered taking the kids to parties and had to sit there listening to other kids mums nattering away! Now I can just plug myself into a film.

think i'll give the golden compass a wide berth. it's another case of the film not being true to the book... but for a straightforward hour and a half of eye-candy, go for it.

talking of eye candy, i see 'hitman' is now available.

we had a few films on last night:

the young poisoners handbook
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0115033/

snakeskin
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0244803/

and wierdsville
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0758798/

poisoners handbook was the best of the lot; snakeskin ended up being a sub-hitcher / dust devil road movie with me not caring for any of the characters, and wierdsville was just stoner dross.

up tonight is 'storm', a swedish matrix clone, and probably hitman. report later. :D

some kids movies are okay... have you seen svankmajer's alice? sure fire way to give any kid nightmares...

watched hitman. it was pants. didn't realise it was based on a computer game. character development? wot's that then?

storm wasnae too good either, and i managed to stay awake for nearly all of it. some good bits, but it figures as an also-ran.

not watching anything for a few days, but i have the following lined up:
four months three weeks and two days
crime and punishment [aki kaurismaki does hamlet]
everything's gone green [douglas copeland]
les amants du pont-neuf [classic!]

'ils' looks good. not out yet though. french horror.

Bloody hell! I've still not had time/chance to watch Hitman and No Country For Old Men!

Saw a poster for Jumper in Manchester on the way to the footie on Wednesday. They are advertising it as a mix between The Bourne Ultimatum and The Matrix. Does look interesting.

ah, the film thread continues...

we had a go with avp requiem. not bad...

otherwise, we've only seen:

woodenhead, monochrome new zealand indie thing that's very odd.
link

Sukiyaki Western Django, a totally bonkers takashi miike western, in english!
link

amadame tutli putli, a nice little animation
link

coming up: vexille.
link

had a go with the bank job. not bad! jason statham continues to surprise me if not with the roles he accepts, then with the ability he seems to play them.

been steadily replacing my tatty vhs collection with dvd's. my most recent was the aeon flux animated boxset: outstanding. witty, surreal, inventive, and just that bit kinky...

[rec] was excellent. highly recommended spanish zombie horror.

[rec]

ils had an interesting mix of scifi and horror, but i couldn't help but think we've been there before.

ils

night of the sunflowers. recommended. more subtitles tho'!

night of the sunflowers

i picked up an interesting short by jeunet [amelie, delicatessen etc] called foutaises. echoes of his later full-length films are in evidence here.

foutaises

a classic by john huston, wise blood. interesting trawl thru the underbelly of american preachers.

wise blood

and an old, typically bonkers film called the falls by peter greenaway. can be a bit tedious and repetetive, but proper laugh-out-loud funny all the same.

the falls

currently working through a dozen or so shorts by veit helmer.

I got it wrong again :( Too much home brew

It was Wanted not Watched with Angelina Jolie.

I don't rate her as an actor but still a good film.
